This itinerary starts out from Maccagno, almost on the
Swiss border, and arrives at Sesto Calende following the Lombard shores
of Lake Maggiore. The itinerary can be followed in two directions, north-south
or else south-north, depending on how easily one manages to reach one
of the two extreme points indicated. The following presents our route
in the north-south direction.
During the Summer months the shore localities can be reached by boat
whose presence on the lake has a long
tradition.
For information about sailing times one should call the
Società gestione
navigazione laghi,Information Office, at the following number:
( tel +39 02 4676101 46761025).
For those who prefer to bicycle the itinerary is divided into two sections:
from Maccagno to Laveno (about 22 kilometres) and from Laveno to Sesto
Calende (about 28 kilometres). The unlimited choice of possible 'digressions'
in order to visit the innumerable monuments to be found along one's road
may, of course, greatly increase the number of kilometres we have indicated.
If one wants it is possible to return to the point of departure by using
the Intra-Laveno ferry and taking the road on the Piedmontese side of
the lake from Sesto Calende to Intra, or vice versa (a distance of about
35 kilometres).
The itinerary does not present particular difficulties. Road traffic is
intense in the southern part of the lake above all on Sundays. The part
to the north of Laveno, on the other hand, is especially enjoyable when
bicycling: the Valtravaglia zone, above all, provides unforgettable views.
Along all of the possible itineraries proposed above there is no lack
of places where one can stop off to eat and drink.
To get to Sesto Calende by car from the south follow the A8 motorway
A8, and take the slip road for Sesto Calende.
To get to Maccagno from Switzerland follow the N2 motorway and take the
slip road for Bellinzona. The two localities can also be reached by train
with the Italian
State Railways o le Swiss
Federal Railways, and by bus.
