This
itinerary begins in Viggiù, continues in Switzerland by passing
the western part of the Mendrisio region and, in following the shore
of the Lake of Lugano, returns to Italy at Porto Ceresio. From here,
along the lakeside and the River Tresa, it arrives at Luino where
it ends. Its length is about 30 kilometres, almost always on secondary
roads or far from those bearing the most motor traffic - therefore
easily done by bicycle (which including stops will take you from about
4 to 6 hours or else the whole day, depending on the number of visits
you prefer to make). Between Riva San Vitale and Brusimpiano the crotti
are not lacking: that is, the old taverns and inns, now transformed
into bars and restaurants at which under colonnades or arches it is
a pleasure to pause for a while to drink or eat a little.
From Luino it is possible to return to our starting point by using
Via Cuvia to Grantola, and then for Ghirla, Marchirolo and Ardena
to once again descend to Brusimpiano and Porto Ceresio. From here
it is possible to climb again to Viggiù by way of Bisuschio
or Besano. If you're cycling keep some energy in reserve for the final
climb... it's quite steep!
For the cyclers the return journey demands a little more than an hour
- although of course it depends on just how fit you are at this point.
Viggiù can be reached with the A8 motorway,
take the slip road for Gazzada and then follow the indications for
Gaggiolo. This locality is also easily reached from the north by taking
the Lugano-Chiasso motorway, slip road for Mendrisio. From Gaggiolo
follow the indications for Viggiù. Bisuschio is the nearest
locality which can be reached by train with the Ferrovie
dello Stato. Viggiù is connected by a bus
service.
